Furnace Maintenance Checklist

Get Your Heating System Ready for Cooler Weather

When cooler weather starts creeping in, it is a good time to make sure your furnace is ready before you actually need it.

The best place to start is with a professional furnace inspection. Scheduling service before temperatures drop gives your HVAC technician a chance to check the system, catch potential problems and make sure everything is operating properly before the cold weather is in full swing.

Once your inspection is on the calendar, there are also a few simple things you can do around the house to help prepare your system and make the most of that service visit.

Schedule a Professional Furnace Inspection

A seasonal furnace inspection should be at the top of your maintenance list, even if your furnace seemed to work fine last winter. Months of sitting unused can still leave room for worn components, airflow problems or other issues that are not obvious to a homeowner. Scheduling early also gives you more time to address repairs before the first cold snap arrives.

During a professional inspection, an HVAC technician can check key system components, evaluate operation and airflow, inspect electrical connections and look for signs of wear or developing problems.

Replace or Check the Air Filter

Before your appointment, take a look at your air filter. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and force your furnace to work harder than necessary. If the filter is visibly dirty or overdue for replacement, change it before the technician arrives. Starting with a clean filter can also make it easier to evaluate how the system is actually performing.

Clear the Area Around the Furnace

Give your technician easy access to the equipment. Remove boxes, storage bins, cleaning supplies and other items that may have accumulated around the furnace. Keeping the area clear also helps support proper airflow and makes routine service safer and easier.

Check Your Thermostat

Turn the thermostat to heat and make sure the furnace responds normally. Pay attention to how quickly the system starts and whether warm air begins coming from the vents. If the thermostat seems unresponsive or the temperature in the home does not match the setting, make a note of it so you can mention it during your appointment.

If your thermostat uses batteries, replace them if needed.

Check Vents and Return Grilles

Walk through the home and make sure your supply vents and return-air grilles are open and unobstructed. Good airflow helps your furnace distribute heat more effectively throughout the home.

Furniture, rugs, curtains and other household items can block airflow without you realizing it. Clear anything that may be covering a vent and vacuum away visible dust or debris.

Pay Attention to Unusual Sounds or Smells

If you test your furnace before the inspection, listen carefully. Banging, rattling, squealing or grinding noises are worth mentioning to your technician. You should also pay attention to unusual or persistent odors. A slight dusty smell when the furnace first runs after several months of inactivity can be normal. Strong or continuing odors should be checked by a professional.

Test Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors

If your home has fuel-burning appliances, carbon monoxide detectors are an important part of home safety. Test them and replace batteries when necessary. If a detector has reached the end of its recommended service life, replace the unit.

Start the Season With a System Check

A little preparation and furnace maintenance can make wintertime much less stressful.

Start by scheduling a professional furnace inspection, then take care of the simple maintenance items you can safely handle yourself. A fresh filter, clear vents, an accessible furnace and a quick thermostat check can all help your technician get a clearer picture of how your system is performing.

If it is time to get your furnace ready for cooler weather, Pioneer Comfort Systems can inspect your heating system and help make sure it is prepared for the season ahead.
